Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy has paid tribute to the late highlife legend Mike Ejeagha, who passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 95.

In an official statement, the Minister extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Ejeagha, praying that his soul rests in peace.

“The nation has lost a treasure trove of cultural heritage and musical genius. Mike Ejeagha’s contributions to Nigerian music are immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” the Minister said.

Widely regarded as a master of Igbo folk music, Mike Ejeagha captivated audiences across generations with his distinctive storytelling style, rooted in folklore and proverbs.

His music educated as well as entertained, cementing his status as a revered custodian of Nigeria’s oral traditions.”Mike Ejeagha’s impact on Igbo culture and music is undeniable.

His extensive discography, comprising over 300 recordings archived in the National Archives of Nigeria, is a testament to his dedication to preserving and promoting our rich cultural heritage,” the Minister added.

As Nigeria mourns the loss of this cultural icon, the Ministry calls on all Nigerians to celebrate Ejeagha’s life and contributions to the nation’s artistic and cultural legacy.

“As we mourn the passing of this musical icon, we celebrate his life and legacy. May his music continue to inspire and educate future generations of Nigerians,” the Minister remarked.

Mike Ejeagha’s work transcended entertainment — his ability to transform traditional wisdom into captivating musical narratives earned him a lasting place in Nigeria’s cultural history.

Through his songs, Ejeagha championed the preservation of Igbo language, folk wisdom, and storytelling traditions.

In honoring his memory, the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy encourages Nigerians to continue promoting and preserving the nation’s diverse cultural heritage.
