How PSG Beat Tottenham on Penalties After Late Fightback To Win First UEFA Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain bounced back from their recent FIFA Club World Cup loss to Chelsea by dramatically winning the UEFA Super Cup.
The French club beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Bluenergy Stadium on Wednesday.
The French club won the Treble last season, including their first Champions League trophy, but lost 3-0 to Chelsea in the Club World Cup final in New Jersey last month.
It initially looked like the Parisians might suffer another painful defeat in the Super Cup.
Tottenham took control with goals from Micky van de Ven in the 39th minute and Cristian Romero early in the second half (48’).
Spurs were solid at the back, with their defenders stopping most of PSG’s attacks.
Although PSG had most of the ball — 67% of possession — they struggled to create clear chances. But in the 85th minute, Vitinha passed to Kang-In Lee, who fired a brilliant shot from outside the box to make it 2-1.
Then, in the 94th minute, Ousmane Dembélé crossed for Gonçalo Ramos to head in the equaliser, taking the game to penalties.
In the shoot-out, Nuno Mendes, Kang-In Lee, Dembélé and Ramos all scored for PSG.
Tottenham missed twice, with Mathys Tel sending his shot wide and Van de Ven seeing his effort saved by Lucas Chevalier.
The save from Van de Ven sealed a 4-3 win for the French champions.

Beating Spurs keeps PSG on course to win a record-equaling six trophies in a calendar year.
PSG’s silverware in 2025 includes the Trophee des Champions – France’s version of the Community Shield – in which PSG beat Monaco 1-0 in Doha in January.
PSG sealed the Ligue 1 title on April 5 with six matches to spare, remaining unbeaten at that stage.
Although they slipped to two defeats in their last four league games, the crown was already theirs.
They then beat Reims 3-0 in the French Cup final to complete the domestic Double, before crushing Inter 5-0 in Munich to win the Champions League and secure a Treble.
This victory over Spurs now gives PSG a shot at a joint-record sixth trophy in December’s FIFA Intercontinental Cup final.
Only Barcelona in 2009 and Bayern Munich in 2020 have been this successful in a calendar year.
