The President of Commonwealth Games Nigeria, Habu Gumel, has warned that the increasing rate of drug use and abuse among young people poses a serious threat to society and could destroy communities if not urgently addressed.

Mr Gumel made this statement while delivering a speech during the recent celebration of this year’s Commonwealth Day. The event was held at the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) Sports Ground in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.

The annual program aims to promote the core values of the Commonwealth, including unity, equity, and youth empowerment. However, this year’s edition placed a strong focus on the growing crisis of drug abuse among Nigerian youth.

Mr Gumel expressed deep concern over the alarming trend, emphasising the urgent need for collective action.

“This is one fight that all—parents, teachers, and the government—should join hands in tackling. Unless addressed head-on, our communities should be ready to face the dire consequences,” he stated.

Representing Mr Gumel at the event was the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Babatunde Popoola.

The initiative sought to foster social interaction among youths while encouraging open dialogue and collaboration to combat drug abuse.

Participants were drawn from four secondary schools in the Amuwo Odofin area, with a special focus on educating students about the dangers of drug addiction.

Olubukola Bojuwoye, a medical expert who served as the resource person, delivered an insightful session on responsible drug use and the devastating consequences of substance abuse. “Using drugs can make or mar you, but the ultimate choice is yours,” Mr Bojuwoye advised the students. The one-day event was coordinated by the NOC Assistant Secretary in charge of Commonwealth Games Affairs, Austin Odigie.

It underscored the commitment of Commonwealth Games Nigeria to addressing social issues affecting young people, using sports as a tool for awareness and positive change.
