LASU Senate Reaffirms Ban on Signing-Out Funfairs by Graduating Students
The Lagos State University (LASU) Senate has reminded final-year students that the practice of holding signing-out funfairs on campus remains prohibited, following repeated cases of misconduct associated with such celebrations.
At its 306th Statutory Meeting, held on Thursday, 25th January 2024, the Senate considered a report presented by the Studentsโ Affairs Division which highlighted the unruly behaviour of some graduating students during previous signing-out activities. The report noted that students flagrantly disregarded university regulations by inviting non-students onto the campus, consuming alcohol, smoking cigarettes, shisha and weed, and dressing in an indecent manner. It further observed that musical equipment and disc jockeys were brought in, while large crowds and indiscriminate parking created serious traffic congestion across the university.
The Senate also expressed concern that these activities disrupted ongoing examinations and coincided with visits by National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Teams, creating a negative impression of the institution. In addition, the aftermath of the events left the campus dirty and untidy, while the Studentsโ Affairs Division, Security Unit and some Deans had a difficult time trying to control the situation.
Condemning the conduct of the students in strong terms, the Senate declared that such behaviour was unacceptable and does not reflect the values of the university. It stressed that LASU is a centre of learning and excellence, and must maintain standards of discipline, orderliness and respect for the academic environment.
The university therefore reminded all final-year students that they are now required to sign an undertaking not to organise any form of funfair or party in the name of signing out. Where a signing-out event is permitted, it must not involve the playing of music, the bringing in of food, drinks or cakes from outside the campus, or the invitation of visitors. Canopies and tents are also not allowed.
LASU further warned that any student or group of students found violating these regulations would face severe consequences. Such offenders will be rusticated for one academic session, and all final-year examinations already written will be cancelled. This will require them to pay a fresh tuition fee, re-register their courses, and re-write the examinations.
Reiterating its commitment to upholding discipline and academic integrity, the Senate urged students to celebrate responsibly and in ways that do not disrupt the learning environment or tarnish the image of the institution.
We are LASU, We are Great!
