Nigeria to host inaugural wheelchair American football exhibition in Lagos

Nigeria will host its first wheelchair American football exhibition on Thursday, 10 September 2026, as part of efforts to promote inclusive sports and create opportunities for athletes with disabilities.

The exhibition, organised by American Football for Elite Development (AFEDEV), will take place at the Outdoor Basketball Arena of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, from 10 a.m.

The event will introduce wheelchair American football to a wider Nigerian audience while promoting participation, leadership and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities through sport.

According to the organisers, the exhibition is expected to bring together government agencies, diplomatic missions, corporate organisations, educational institutions, disability organisations, development partners and members of the media.

AFEDEV said the initiative is part of its efforts to promote the development of American football and adaptive sports in Nigeria.

Wheelchair American football is an adapted form of American football designed to enable people with physical disabilities to participate in the sport. It places emphasis on teamwork, strategy and physical activity while modifying aspects of the conventional game to accommodate wheelchair users.

The organisers said the Lagos exhibition will provide an opportunity for stakeholders and members of the public to learn more about the sport and its potential for inclusion and community development.
