Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced the arrival of three brand-new train sets comprising 12 coaches in total for the Lagos Blue Line Rail.

This is a significant boost to Lagos State’s public transportation infrastructure.

The announcement was made via the Governor’s official Facebook page, where he shared the progress with residents and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernizing the state’s transport system

. “Dear Lagosians,I’m happy to share that we have taken delivery of three brand-new train sets of 12 coaches in total for the Lagos Blue Line Rail. This means shorter wait times and more comfortable trips for everyone using the Blue Line. It’s a step forward in our efforts to make daily commute in Lagos less stressful and more reliable.”

The Lagos Blue Line Rail is part of the state’s Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) project, a major initiative designed to ease congestion and reduce reliance on road transport in Africa’s most populous city.

The fully electric rail line, which runs between Marina and Mile 2, began commercial operations in September 2023 and has been lauded for reducing travel times from over two hours to under 30 minutes during peak hours.

The newly acquired train sets are expected to expand capacity on the route, allowing for more frequent service and greater rider comfort, particularly during rush hour periods.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also used the opportunity to provide an update on the ongoing expansion of the Blue Line toward Okokomaiko, a densely populated suburb in Lagos’ western corridor.

“We’re not stopping here. Work is ongoing to extend the Blue Line all the way to Okokomaiko, and we’re aiming to finish that by 2026. I know it’s been a long time coming, but I truly believe we’re building something that will change how we move around this city for the better.”

The extension to Okokomaiko is seen as critical to providing affordable and efficient transport to underserved areas, linking communities along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridor to the city’s commercial and administrative hubs.

Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded his message with an appeal for continued public support and optimism.

“Thank you for being patient and hopeful. We’re getting there, together.”

As Lagos continues its journey toward becoming a smart megacity, transportation reform remains a central pillar of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s THEMES+ development agenda, which emphasises traffic management, public transportation, and infrastructure renewal.

With the arrival of these new train sets and the steady progress on rail extensions, the Lagos State Government is signaling that the vision of a modern, multi-modal transportation network is steadily becoming reality.
