In a swift and coordinated response, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency responders successfully combated an industrial fire outbreak at Mega Plastics Company located at No.4, Ilupeju Bypass, beside the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office in the Ilupeju area of Lagos on Saturday, the 23rd of September, 2023.
The incident, which occurred in the early morning hours, was promptly reported to the authorities by Traffic Officer Ayo Olaosebikan, known as Falcon, from Zone 21 of LASTMA. Officer Olaosebikan confirmed that the LASTMA rescue team was the first to arrive at the scene, responding to the emergency call at approximately 6:30 a.m.
Officer Olaosebikan stated, “Immediately we arrived at the scene of the industrial fire, we quickly informed other emergency responders, particularly the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services and the Nigerian Police.” This quick response played a crucial role in preventing the fire from spreading further and causing more damage.
While the exact causes of the industrial fire are yet to be determined, preliminary investigations conducted by LASTMA revealed that the storage and factory sections of the petrochemical company were significantly affected by the fire outbreak.
The collaborative efforts of various emergency response agencies ensured that the situation was brought under control. Among the emergency responders present were the Federal and State Fire Services, along with personnel from the Nigerian Police and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or fatalities resulting from the fire outbreak at the Mega Plastics Company as of the latest update.
The quick response and efficient coordination among emergency responders contributed significantly to minimizing potential harm.
The incident serves as a reminder of the critical role that emergency responders play in safeguarding lives and property within the state. Lagosians can take solace in the fact that dedicated professionals are always ready to respond swiftly to emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
As investigations into the cause of the industrial fire continue, authorities and relevant agencies remain committed to ensuring that such incidents are minimized in the future through proactive safety measures and rigorous enforcement of safety protocols in industrial settings.
Indeed, the successful containment of the industrial fire at Ilupeju is a testament to the effectiveness of the emergency response system in Lagos State.
The collaborative efforts of LASTMA, the Fire Services, the Police, and LASEMA underscore the importance of preparedness and quick action in averting potential disasters.
