Lagos government says it has no involvement in “Oro” practices or strike action

The Lagos State Government has denied any involvement in the rumoured forthcoming “Oro” traditional festival in the state scheduled for August 1 to 15, clashing with the planned nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest.
Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the state’s Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mr Gboyega Akosile, stated this on Thursday, while speaking with Vanguard on phone over the development.
Akosile, stressed that the festival had always been the practice in the state just like other religious activities held across the country without government approval.
According to him, “No one questions the government when other religions hold their activities. This has never been an issue before now why are people reading meanings and getting government involved.
“Same respect should be maintained for traditional worshippers. It’s their constructional rights to do so in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
“For instance, Oro festival is just like any other religious festival. Eid-el-Kabir for Muslim and Easter or Christmas for Christians and have no business with Lagos state government’s involvement or approval.
“Government is independent of religious festival so far it’s done in an atmosphere of peace and harmony.
“However, we can assure the populace of protection of lives and property. It’s the duty of government to ensure safety and we shall do.
“Protesters have their rights just like the traditional worshippers who want to perform their activities too. It’s no business of the state government for emphasis.
“We therefore, urge everyone to adhere strictly to the rules of engagement on the set days for peace and tranquility to continue to reign.”
