Adeleke sacked, tribunal declares Oyetola winner of Osuns’ July 16th election

The Election Petitions Tribunal hearing the All Progressives Congress’(APC) Adegboyega Oyetola’s petition over the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party’s(PDP) Ademola Adeleke on Friday, January 27th, annulled the result of the July 16th Osun governorship poll.
Justice Tetsea Kume, delivered a majority decision, declaring that the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) did not comply substantially with the constitution and the provisions of the Electoral Act.
He subsequently deducted the over-voting observed from the votes scored by the candidates and declared that Oyetola won the election, having polled 314, 921, while Adeleke’s score came down to 290, 266.
He directed INEC to withdraw Adeleke’s certificate of return and issue another one to Oyetola who won a majority of the lawful votes.
Meanwhile, a minority decision by one of the judges is being read as of the time of filing this report.
INEC had declared Adeleke the winner of the election with a total of 403,371 votes. He was said to have won in 17 of the 30 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.
Oyetola of the APC was said to have won in the remaining 13 LGAs with 375,027 votes.
Adeleke is expected to appeal the ruling of the tribunal and will remain in office pending the final determination of the matter by superior courts.
