Victor Boniface Sparks Retirement Speculation With Cryptic Instagram Post

Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has sparked widespread speculation about his international future after posting — and swiftly deleting — a cryptic message on Instagram hinting at possible retirement from the national team.
Following another difficult outing with the Super Eagles, Boniface took to social media on Friday to express his gratitude for the chance to represent Nigeria. His message read:
“Proud to play for my country and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment — the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I don hang boot.”
The phrase “I don hang boot” — Nigerian Pidgin for “I have retired” — quickly drew attention, with fans and pundits debating whether the post was a genuine farewell or another playful remark from the 24-year-old, who is known for his humorous online presence.
The post attracted over 25,000 reactions before Boniface deleted it, adding further intrigue to the situation.
Some view it as an emotional response to recent frustrations with the national team, while others believe it may simply be a light-hearted comment.
At this stage, no official statement has been released by Boniface or the Nigeria Football Federation regarding his status with the Super Eagles.
Club Future Uncertain
Meanwhile, Boniface’s club future is also under scrutiny.
According to reports from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Bayer Leverkusen are open to selling the Nigerian forward this summer.
Romano recently stated:
“Victor Boniface and Bayer Leverkusen could part ways this summer with a good proposal for both sides. After his move to Saudi Arabia collapsed in January, new options are now available on the market.”
Boniface had been linked to a move to Al Nassr earlier this year, but the transfer ultimately fell through. Interest remains strong from clubs in the Premier League and Turkey.
Season Recap
Boniface joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2023 from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise. During the 2024/25 season, he scored eight goals and registered one assist in 19 league appearances.
As uncertainty looms over both his international and club careers, football fans will be watching closely to see what comes next for the talented striker.
