Background
Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, remains central to national economic planning, contributing significantly to internally generated revenue and serving as a hub for commerce, finance and innovation.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who served as Lagos governor between 1999 and 2007, is widely credited with initiating key fiscal and structural reforms that strengthened the state’s revenue base and governance systems.
Since assuming office in 2023, Mr Tinubu has implemented a range of economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy and changes to foreign exchange policy, with subnational governments expected to align policies to support implementation and mitigate socio-economic impacts.
As Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa leads the state legislature in lawmaking and oversight, playing a critical role in shaping policies across sectors such as infrastructure, education, health and transportation.Analysts say sustained collaboration between federal and state institutions—particularly in Lagos—remains essential for effective policy execution and long-term national development.
