Zimbabwe international Divine Lunga survives gun attack in South Africa

Zimbabwe international Divine Lunga escaped unharmed after unknown gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in Johannesburg, South African police have confirmed.

The 31-year-old defender was reportedly driving through the inner-city suburb of Hillbrow on Sunday when his vehicle came under attack.

South African police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said authorities had opened an investigation into a case of attempted murder, adding that no arrests had been made.She did not disclose further details of the incident.

However, South African newspaper The Citizen reported that Lunga was travelling to church with his younger brother when a gunman opened fire on their vehicle.

According to the report, the attackers may have mistaken the footballer for an undercover police officer.Lunga, who plays for Zimbabwe’s national team and South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns, was not injured in the attack.

The defender has earned 21 caps for Zimbabwe and was part of the Warriors squad during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Since joining Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021, Lunga has helped the Pretoria-based club win four Premier Soccer League titles and the CAF Champions League crown in May.Neither Mamelodi Sundowns nor the Zimbabwe Football Association had officially commented on the shooting at the time of filing this report.

However, the Warriors’ official social media account posted a photograph of Lunga in a prayerful pose with the caption: “In God we trust.”South Africa continues to grapple with high levels of violent crime and consistently records one of the world’s highest murder rates, with shootings and armed attacks remaining a major public security concern.
