Revealed: Why Nigeria Receives More Funds From Bill Gates Foundation

Bill Gates, Co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, revealed why Nigeria receives the largest share of the foundation’s intervention funds in Africa.
Speaking at the 2024 NutriVision Dialogue in Abuja, Gates stated, “We spend a lot in Asia, but we spend even more in Africa. The country where we spend the most in Africa is Nigeria.”
Gates highlighted Nigeria’s substantial population and significant needs as key reasons for the extensive funding.
He added, “I’ve literally spent billions in Nigeria,” noting the progress made in reducing child mortality, though he stressed the need for further improvements.
The foundation prioritises tackling global health inequalities, focusing on eradicating measles, malaria, and polio.
Gates announced plans to increase future spending, particularly on primary healthcare, due to its high impact per dollar.
In addition to health, the foundation invests heavily in agriculture to boost Nigeria’s economic development.
Gates emphasised support for agricultural productivity through access to high-yield seeds, fertilisers, and better weather predictions, aiming to reduce food costs and malnutrition.
Since its inception, the foundation has collaborated with African institutions and communities across 49 countries.
