Iwobi celebrates Independence Day victory
Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi is happy to be having a perfect Independence Day celebration.
Iwobi was in action on Saturday in the Premier League as his team Everton came from behind to snatch a 2-1 win over Southampton at St.Mary’s.
Delighted to have helped his team to another crucial victory, Iwobi, who bagged an assist in Saturday’s win over the Saints, said there was no better way he would be wished to celebrate Independence Day.
“Happy Nigerian Independence Day My Peoples, No Better Way To Enjoy The Day!” Iwobi wrote on his Twitter handle with accompanying celebration pictures from Saturday’s victorious outing.
An eight-minute goal frenzy saw the Toffees coming from behind to claim all three points at St Mary’s to further pile the pressure on Ralph Hasenhüttl.
After a largely uneventful first 45 minutes, it was another Nigerian, Joe Aribo, who opened the scoring only a few minutes after the second half began.
However, Everton kept their cool and then upped the gears as two new signings combined for their equaliser — Andre Onana headed the ball across to Conor Coady who finished smartly.
A matter of seconds later, Frank Lampard’s men got another goal for themselves and turned the game on its head — Iwobi put a speculative ball into the back post, but Dwight McNeil finished well to send the blue section of the stadium into a frenzy.
Though the hosts tried hard to at least get a share of the spoils, it was never to be as the result meant that Hasenhüttl’s side have only picked up seven points from eight games.
For Everton, the good times appear to be back as they have gained a bit of breathing space after back-to-back wins in the Premier League now see them occupying the 11th position with 10 points..
