The 10th edition of the Uma-Okoro Foundation basketball camp was held at the Ilupeju basketball court in Lagos from July 30-31, 2024.

Over 250 kids aged 11-17 participated in the two-day event.

The camp, open to both boys and girls, offered a unique experience that went beyond basketball.

According to Ukoha Michael Uma-Okoro, convener of the camp, “While basketball remains a core element, we also emphasize the value of empathy, love, hard work, and competition.”

Uma-Okoro, a former basketball player turned sports coach, mentor, and teacher in the UK, added that the camp aims to guide alternative career paths and foster an innovative mindset. “It’s about more than just physical health; it’s about unifying people and building a community.”

Participants received free basketball kits, shoes, medals, certificates, trophies, and prize money. Both local and international coaches were on hand to work with the kids.

The foundation’s community outreach program also benefited children in the Amuwo Odofin area, providing food items, clothes, shoes, books, and chocolates.

Uma-Okoro, who overcame a challenging upbringing in Lagos to find success in Europe, is passionate about empowering young Nigerians through basketball and beyond.
