President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his condolences to heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua following the fatal road accident on the Lagosโ€“Ibadan Expressway that claimed two lives and left the former world champion injured.

In a personal message addressed to Mr Joshua on Monday, the president described the incident as a tragic loss that has cast a shadow over the season, while expressing sympathy with the boxer and the families of the deceased.

โ€œI extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagosโ€“Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,โ€ Mr Tinubu said.โ€œThis immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season.โ€

The president said he shared in the emotional burden faced by Joshua and his family in the aftermath of the crash, noting that the boxer has consistently represented Nigeria with honour on the global stage.

โ€œI sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,โ€ he said.

Mr Tinubu also called for national solidarity in moments of grief, urging Nigerians to draw strength from shared humanity and collective responsibility.

โ€œIn moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny,โ€ the president added. He offered prayers for Mr Joshuaโ€™s recovery and for the families of those who lost their lives in the crash.โ€œI pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed,โ€ Mr Tinubu said.

Fatal accident

The message followed confirmation by the Federal Road Safety Corps that Joshua was among five persons involved in the crash, which occurred near Sagamu in Ogun State. Two people died in the incident, while Joshua sustained minor injuries and was rescued by FRSC operatives.

The Lagosโ€“Ibadan Expressway, Nigeriaโ€™s busiest highway, has recorded several fatal crashes in recent years, often linked to speeding and dangerous overtaking, especially during peak travel periods.

Though born in the United Kingdom, Joshua, a former two-time heavyweight champion, remains one of Nigeriaโ€™s most celebrated athletes and a prominent global sports figure.

His involvement in the accident has drawn widespread public concern and an outpouring of support from political leaders; including the Lagos and Ogun State Governors as well as prominent sports personalities and fans across the country.
