Alia condemns Benue killings, vows justice for victims
Governor Hyacinth Alia has strongly condemned the deadly attack on Mbalom community in Gwer-East Local Government Area of Benue State, describing the killings as barbaric and a grave threat to public safety.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Makurdi by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Tersoo Kula, the governor expressed outrage over the incident, which reportedly occurred on Saturday evening and left more than nine people dead, with several others injured.
Governor Alia said the attack was “barbaric and unacceptable, and a direct affront to the collective peace and security of the state,” warning that such acts of violence would not be tolerated.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and communities affected by the violence, assuring them of the government’s support during what he described as “this difficult and painful period.”
The governor also raised concern over what he characterised as “a pattern of calculated and selective attacks” in parts of the state, noting that the evolving nature of the violence requires a more coordinated and sustained response.
“These acts of terror, though increasingly hydra-headed, will not be allowed to thrive in Benue,” he said, reaffirming his administration’s determination to confront and eliminate criminal elements threatening the peace of communities.
Governor Alia commended security agencies, particularly the police, for their swift response to the incident and their continued efforts to stabilise the affected area. He assured residents that security operatives are “on the heels of the perpetrators” and would ensure their arrest and prosecution.
He further directed security agencies to intensify operations aimed at preventing further attacks and restoring normalcy in the area.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the governor said his government would “leave no stone unturned” in protecting citizens across the state.

He added that steps were being taken to strengthen intelligence gathering mechanisms and deepen collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including local communities.
Governor Alia urged residents to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, while encouraging them to support security agencies with timely and credible information.
“Our government will not waver in its pursuit of peace, justice and security for all,” he stated.
